Workers have the capability to positively impact employee health in a number of ways, including making environmental and cultural changes. As part of cultural change, wellness challenges at work can provide a fun, motivating spin on promotion of health behaviours.

Here are 5 weight loss challenges to start at work


  1. Daily Habit Challenge

    Daily habit challenges function well over shorter, 2-multi week periods. The idea is to initiate a different healthy habit that employees must do daily. Habits can be anything from packing your own lunch to taking a daily stroll. Every behaviour earns a raffle draw, with illustrations at the end of each week.

  2. Walking Challenge

    Walking is one of the common forms of exercise, and there are various approaches to actualize walking challenges. For instance, members can earn a reward for walking a certain number of steps every day for a set timeframe, or can win a raffle entry for each 1,000-2,000 steps walked over set time.

  3. Participation Challenge

    This challenge encourages members to achieve a goal task a certain number of times over a set period, rewarding those who achieve a specific number. For instance, if an employer finances a health club membership (or has a wellness centre nearby) they can challenge their workers to attend 25 fitness classes in 30 days. Employers can also challenge workers to do different things like bring their very own health lunch (rather than eating out) 15 times each month or to walk 5 miles every day.

  4. Team Wellness Challenge

    Team challenges can encourage a sense of community and rouse people to a common purpose. Members work toward large, group objectives, for example, “walk 5,000 miles” or “lose 50 pounds” and monitor group results on a white board or poster. Employees can offer an incentive for the whole group, for example, week after weekly fitness classes at the workplace or a free, healthy lunch.

  5. Plank Challenge

    Planking is extraordinary for core steadiness and should be done in a short amount of time. Employers can challenge participating employees to plank a set time each day, with times increasing five seconds each day to achieve a certain time objective more than 3-5 weeks. Plank challenges can be done as a group (where those who have the best completion percentage win) or individually.
