Vitamin D - where to get it?

Vitamin D, or actually D3, is delivered to our body, among others thanks to the consumption of oily fish such as mackerel, tuna and salmon, and also thanks to the sun's rays. Less than half an hour in the sun makes us deliver the right dose. However, let's not forget that in summer we often "hide" under a thick layer of sunscreen, and when the hottest months are over, there is simply not enough sun. Therefore, the majority of Poles (even 90% are said!) Suffer from vitamin D deficiency. What can its effects be? What to do to provide the body with the right dose and not to overdose?

Why do we need vitamin D?

Thanks to vitamin D, our body better absorbs calcium and phosphorus. Therefore, if our body has absorbed the right amount of it, we have no problems with teeth, and the bones are strong and healthy. This vitamin is also responsible for regulating the work of the immune system and the circulatory system. Thanks to it, there is also a lower risk of cancer development. Too little vitamin D carries a risk of rickets, osteoporosis, muscle cramps, and walking problems. Many people do not realize how important this vitamin is for our body and downplay the symptoms that may indicate its deficiency.

Vitamin D - deficiency symptoms

Vitamin D deficiency has a number of symptoms that should alert us to the fact that something abnormal is going on in the body. They include, among others

  • general weakness

  • trouble sleeping,

  • diarrhea

  • bone and muscle pain,

  • muscle cramps,

  • problems with concentration,

  • vision problems and

  • lack of appetite.

Vitamin D deficiency can lead to serious diseases, including for heart disease, rickets, osteoporosis, asthma, multiple sclerosis, depression, diabetes and even cancer.

Vitamin D - symptoms of excess

Both deficiency and excess of vitamin D are harmful to the body. In the latter case, excess calcium in the body may result in disorders of the nervous system and heart, problems with kidney stones, and in newborns - bone diseases. Some symptoms of excess are very similar to vitamin deficiency. Symptoms of excess may include:

  • loss of appetite

  • increased thirst

  • nausea, vomiting, diarrhea

  • weakness of the body,

  • frequent urination,

  • itching and sweating of the skin

  • headache,

  • eye pain.

Vitamin D is very important to our body. Its deficiency can lead to many diseases. That is why it is so important to provide it, not only by walking on sunny days, but also by eating the aforementioned fatty fish, e.g. herring, mackerel, tuna or salmon. Additionally, eating egg yolks, dairy, or butter can help. Vitamin D also contains fish oil, hated by most of us in childhood. It is worth to convince yourself of it!

Vitamin D actually affects the entire body and its deficiency is associated with so many diseases that its presence in our diet and lifestyle should not be ignored.
