Traveling to the countries of South America, including, of course, Bolivia, requires preparations - not only formal, but also more pleasant, such as setting the route of the trip. Here are 5 noteworthy places that Bolivia has to offer!

Lake Titicaca

Lake Titicaca is the largest high-mountain lake and for this reason it is worth visiting it when visiting Bolivia. It is located on the border of two countries: Bolivia and Peru, at an altitude of approx. 3812 m above sea level. The lake is 190 km long and 80 km at its widest point. The average depth varies between 140 and 180 m.

Titi means puma, in turn caca is a species of hare. The lake consists of two parts, a larger and a smaller one, connected by a strait. From the bird's eye view, its shape resembles a puma chasing a hare - hence the name of this place. On its surface there are several islands and artificially created movable islands.

We already know the basic information about Lake Titicaca, but what is definitely worth seeing? The town of Copacabana is situated by the water. The moments spent in it will not be lost. It houses, for example, the architecturally interesting Cathedral of Our Lady of the Candlesticks, to which many pilgrimages go. In addition, you can also climb the Cerro Calvaria mountain and admire not only the panorama of the city, but also the enormous surface of the lake. The view is amazing.

There are two islands on the lake that are worth writing on the map of your travels - the Island of the Sun and the Island of the Moon. The second one was a high-security prison, because the water temperature and the distance from the land made it difficult for the prisoners to escape. In turn, the Island of the Sun is for many a sacred and unusual place. According to the legend, this is where the Inca sun god, Inti, was born. It is probably also the birthplace of the first Inca - Manco Capaca. The islands provide a wonderful landscape, charming coves, Inca ruins and small villages where Indians live to this day.

Bolivia - Uyuni

The town of Uyuni in the old days was located on the route that transported minerals from the Andes. No wonder that it has gained the name of an important railway junction. Unfortunately, at some point, the mineral resources simply began to run out, and in the 1940s, mining was stopped. Wagons, locomotives and other parts of trains were abandoned. Therefore, about 3 km outside the city there is a real graveyard of these vehicles. It is estimated that there are over 100 of them there, mainly locomotives. The area is in no way separated, fenced or guarded, everyone can freely explore the remains of old times, watch the rusty trains at will. Actually, nothing is forbidden. It is an amazing trace of history, which, unfortunately, is getting more and more damaged, not only by rust, but also by spraying inscriptions and people who steal fragments of carriages.

There is also an island completely covered with cacti nearby. Some of them are even millennial! Around this place there are white, shallow salt lakes, thanks to which the view is breathtaking and the place full of cacti seems almost unreal.

Speaking of Uyuni, you can't miss this amazing place. While in Bolivia, you must see Salar de Uyuni and feel like in heaven for a moment!

Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia

Salar de Uyuni is called the largest salt cellar in the world and it is not accidental, as it is estimated that the vast area (10 582 km2) contains as much as 10 billion tons of salt. The place is located 3653 m above sea level. and it is flat, which intensifies the amazing effect. What? Salar de Uyuni is a remnant of a Pleistocene lake. The surface of the salt is covered with a small layer of water, which creates a mirror effect. That's why it feels like you're standing in the clouds, in the sky, in a completely different dimension! The impression is amazing, especially since you can move around this place without any problems. For many, Salar de Uyuni is considered a wonder of the world and taking into account the fantastic views and spaces, it is no wonder, the more that the mirror and white actually extend to the horizon. It is a place that cannot be forgotten.

Bolivia and Laguna Colorada

Another amazing place is definitely Laguna Colorada, one of the colorful lakes - red, shallow and salty. It owes its color to sediment and algae of this color. On the surface of the lagoon you can see white islands that enhance the amazing view.

The whole is complemented by flamingos that we can see on the shores of the lake. It is true that there are fewer and fewer of them every year, but they still appear and attract the eyes of tourists.

The lagoon is located in the southwestern part of the Altiplano plateau, on which the Salar de Uyuni is also located.

Bolivia and the city of Potosi

Potosi is a town located at an altitude of 3,967 meters above sea level. It was founded in the 16th century, during the real gold rush - there were huge amounts of silver here. They were exhausted in the 18th century, but all these years the city was a powerhouse. Today we will not see it as much as we did centuries ago, but many of its signs have been preserved in a slightly less visible form.

Why is this city worth visiting? For example, because of the really interesting architecture (it is worth visiting the churches). In addition, you can visit the old silver mines, which today no longer extract this raw material, but tin - during the trip you can see what the work of local miners looks like. Although the mines are said to be modernized, the actual work has not changed much over the years. The more it is worth going inside and seeing it with your own eyes.

Bolivia is a beautiful country. The views and places are amazing and you would like to keep coming back to them. In addition, it is a really cheap country in terms of tourism, so it is also worth appreciating and visiting it!
